Project Prompt

To produce a new interactive interpretation of either a mythical product or the sales pitch for a mythical product that might be seen in a commercial on late night TV.  The project was to be viewed by fellow students in the class along with family and alumni.

Our Theme

Our team chose to meet the project prompt by creating an interactive game that might be seen on a late night infomercial.  This game was named "Chunky Monkeys" and consists of 3 channels where monkeys climb down "trees" towards the game player.  It is the player's responsibility to keep the monkeys from reaching the food at the bottom using a combination of a gun and waving them away by covering the food.

How to Play

First, the player adjusts the difficulty by adjusting the Donkey Kong knob.  Then, they press the "Start" button in order begin the game.  Upon starting, the monkeys begin to descend the tree.  While still above the dotted green line, the monkeys can be shot with the gun, causing them to pause.  Once below the green line, they no longer respond to shots from the gun, and instead are repelled by the user covering the bananas at the bottom.  When the corresponding banana is covered, the monkey will climb back up the tree for a fixed period of time.  The user wins by keeping all monkeys from reaching the bottom of the tree for the entire game time (45 seconds).  If the user wins, the LEDs lighting the trees will flash and the win light will be illuminated.

Design Specifications

Product should not progress without continued interaction from the user.
Without continued interaction from the user, the monkeys in our game reach the bottom, causing the user to "lose".  At this point, the monkeys all
return to the top of the tree and the game is over.

The average user should take approximately 30 seconds to interact with the game.  No one should be able to complete the process in less than 20 seconds.
It takes 45 seconds to complete the game.  Therefore, no one is able to complete the process in less than 20 seconds.  In the event that a user fails to
ward off the monkey for 20 seconds, they can continue interaction through pressing the reset button.

The interaction with the user should involve at least 3 distinct user interactions.
The interactions with our game include: Setting the difficulty, pressing the start button, shooting the monkeys, and waving them away.

The process of interacting with the game should result in at least 4 distinct outcomes.
The outcomes of the game include winning, losing, making the monkeys move up, making them pause, changing the difficulty, and starting/resetting
     the game.

The game should require large scale motion on the part of the user for at least one of its interactions.
Our game required the user to move the gun for shooting and move their hands to cover the food.

At least 2 of the interactions with the user must produce different outcomes based on the state of the game.
Based on the location of the monkey, shooting or waving must be used.  Waving has no effect when monkeys are above line, and shooting has no
effect when monkeys are below it.  Changing the difficulty also has no effect once the game has started.

The game should include a creative display of the passage of time.
The passage of time is indicated by a servo slowly moving a banana towards a monkey's mouth at the bottom of the game.  When the banana reaches
the monkey, the game time is over.

Each game should include an indication of when it is active and when it is dormant.
Our game has lights within the trees that glow when active and are dark once gameplay is complete.

When the user completes the interaction, the game should provide an exciting audio and/or visual experience.
Our game used flashing lights within the body of the trees to provide feedback upon interaction completion. If the user loses the game, the bananas
are withheld (from the timer monkey aka the user) and the lights are turned off, inspiring most users to try the game again.

The game may be designed to support two users.
Our game can be used by two people if one person uses the gun for shooting, and the other waves away the monkeys.

The game must be usable without human instruction.
Pictorial instruction is included on the base to provide users with directions on how to interact with the game.

Further Requirements

  • Must fit into a footprint of 18" wide by 18" deep by 36" high
  • Power Supply available has 13.2V and 5V sources
  • At least one of the user interactions must be an analog input (difficulty knob)
  • At least one of the user interactions must involve non-contact sensing (reflector sensors)
  • Must provide user with feedback on interactions (vibrating handle of gun, monkeys reverse if waved)
